BSG 4x15: No Exit
Okay, I didn't comment on the mutiny episodes, but now it's been too long since I've seen them; suffice it to say that they were AMAZING! Oh, poor, poor doomed Gaeta! Tom Zarek! You were my favourite evil resistance leader!
However! This week's episode blew it out of the water.
Cavil, you eeeeeeevil genius! Torturing all your forbears: Tyrol, Sam, Tigh... and Ellen. He can't hear hear x-rays! That speech was so effective; a large part of describing transcendent experiences is struggling - futilely - against the inevitable barriers imposed by language, and synaesthesia is a poor substitute. And it's worse for Cavil, because he hasn't even at least had the opportunity or pleasure of experiencing the things he's describing. AND THEN! He planted them on the Colonies to witness the annihilation of life there! All of this has happened before, indeed.
ELLEN! She's back! And the OneRing Cylon to rule them all! Messing with Cavil's head so brilliantly! She named him John after her father!
I kept wondering why Ellen was so courteous to the centurion; most of the other models treat them with indifference at best, even after Natalie gave them free will. It made total sense: the centurions on Earth destroyed it just like they later did the Colonies. Moral of the story? Don't fuck with the centurions.
Speaking of the Centurions, they created the One True God? What?!? That's the one part of this that didn't make any sense to me.
There was so much other stuff, too: Anders! Kara! HODGEMAN! I need another viewing just to keep track of everything.
A very dense, information-heavy episode, but really great, and they managed to do the one thing I didn't expect: resolve several dangling threads of the myth-arc rather elegantly. The writers of BSG have always been upfront about the fact that they're making the myth-arc up as they go along, and one would expect that to mean botching the mythology sooner or later, but damn. I think they might just pull it off.
tzikeh has a very interesting post on the literary antedecent of the episode's title. (Spoilery, obviously, so read only after you've seen the episode.)
